Adjustments to our 2020 Season

September 20, 2020 By Lily Nichol

We’ve made a lot of changes this season to ensure that our shoppers, vendors, staff and volunteers are kept safe during COVID-19 while also making sure that fresh, local food continued to be available to our community. To this end we have extended our “Summer Season” to run until November 12th, 2020. It will continue every Thursday in Tipperary Park from 3-7pm (with 3:00-3:30 continuing as priority entrance for those with small children, the disabled, the immunocompromised and seniors).

Normally we would have a Winter Market on Belmont Street that would begin in November but due to several factors, including finances and safety concerns, we have cancelled our Winter Market on Belmont Street this year. We will reopen in Tipperary Park a month earlier next year, in April, to help bridge the gap.

Thank you for your support and shopping local!

We Need Your Help!

June 22, 2020 By Lily Nichol

The New West Farmers Market is proud to be able to continue to provide the community with fresh, local food during a scary time for us all. We have worked extremely hard with the City of New West, Fraser Health, the BC Association of Farmers Markets, and the BCCDC to ensure that our market can continue to serve our vendors, you and your families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for your continued support, we couldn’t do this without you!

During this time we have made a lot of changes regarding how we operate to ensure we are able to continue to be here every week for New West. These changes have severely impacted our operating budget. We are working hard to find alternative sources of funding as our income has taken a detrimental hit and our expenses have skyrocketed to ensure we are able to safely run the farmers market. However, at the end of the day, we are not able to financially recover from this on our own and we need your help.

Please consider donating to the New West Farmers Market so that we are able to continue to support small local businesses, low income families and seniors through the Nutrition Coupon Program and bring our amazing market to our community every Thursday from 3-7pm. Every dollar you donate helps keep the market afloat. We couldn’t do this without you. You can donate online here or in person on Thursdays. Thank you!

Black Lives Matter Statement

June 3, 2020 By Lily Nichol

During this difficult and painful time, we at the New West Farmers Market want to reach out to the community.

To those who are suffering: we see you. We hear you. We share your frustration. We share your pain. We do not support discrimination in any form, and we feel that with all that has been going on, we want to make sure our stance on this is clear: black lives matter. This is not a controversial statement to us.

The New West Farmers Market is community based, and our community is a diverse one. The world needs to change, and that change starts with us.

A Message From Our Board Re: COVID-19

March 30, 2020 By Lily Nichol

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the New West Farmers Market will be operating in a limited capacity to ensure safe access to local food sources in our community.

Now more than ever we are relying on local food supply for food security to work in tandem with larger grocery stores and serve the public need.

The Provincial Government has listed farmers’ markets as an essential service under their List of COVID-19 Essential Services.

We have full support and backing from the BC Centre for Disease Control, Fraser Health and the City of New Westminster to proceed with the Farmers Market, albeit in a much more regulated setting.

We are working closely with Fraser Health to ensure a safe market environment. Some of the guidelines include:

  • Fencing to allow entrance from one side only
  • Carefully managed entrance and exit to limit number of shoppers
  • Limited to food and beverage vendors only
  • No sampling, musicians, demonstrations or craft tables
  • Hand washing stations will be provided
  • Cashless transactions only

We want to keep people in our community safe while also providing them access to local food during this difficult time.
