FYI: Foodtree iPhone app

September 12, 2011 By newwestfarmers

We’d like to introduce you to a new and exciting free iPhone app focused on farmers markets and gorgeous pictures of fresh food in our community.  It’s called Foodtree and you can grab it here: http://via.fdtr.me/iphone-markets. We’ve been using it this past two weeks to upload some nice pictures and create a visual of what’s in season. Here are a few pictures that I took this past week at the market. It made me learn something – I had no idea what those purple beans were and had a nice conversation with the farmer about it.

Foodtree is a company working in the intersection of food and technology. Their goal is to help people understand where their food comes from, who produces it, and who handles it as it travels from source to plate. They empower people to make informed and healthy choices about their food.

Foodtree’s smart phone app is completely free to download. It allows both vendors and shoppers to take instant photos of the food at the farmers market, tag it, connect it to its source, and share it with the community via Facebook and Twitter. Photos show up with the app and on the web right away and create a local What’s Fresh screen that food lovers can use to see what kind of amazing food our local producers are offering today.

Users of Foodtree can “follow” food types to know who sells it and where to find it. They can follow a farm or producer as well to see their fresh harvests and where they’ll be selling that day or later in the week, and with the recent addition of commenting within the app, conversations about pricing and recipes are becoming more common.

Try it out at the next Royal City Farmers Market!

PS: You should know we don’t get compensated to mention Foodtree to you. We just think it’s fun and love looking at pictures of food. 🙂
