June 9: Opening Market 2011
Can you believe it’s finally here? Yes, it’s true! Summer season is back in Tipperary Park at 4th and Royal in New Westminster starting Thursday, June 9th. This year we are pleased to announce we’ve added extra hot food vendors to make your afternoon complete. Each market has 40 vendors signed up so we’re packed to the very top.
Our opening market this year will feature a return appearance by the fine folks at the Seymour Artillery Historical Association to continue to tradition of blowing off a cannon, as well as BC’s Best Teen Band, The Knots. We are thrilled that the entertainment this season is sponsored by The Heritage Grill. Allyson Grant will be in attendance painting faces and this year we are pleased to be offering a kids’ activity and craft area at every market courtesy of local realtor Derrick Thornhill.
Last year we opened the market in the rainy, wet weather and this year the forecast predicts nice and sunny weather. We hope we see you at the market to kick off our 2011 Summer Season.
You can reach the market via transit by taking the 106 bus or the Skytrain to Columbia Street Station and walking to the market at 4th and Royal. Parking is available in the neighbourhood or at City Hall’s lot after 4:30. Please respect our neighbours. A bike rack is located at the lower end of the market, or you can always drop it off to the fine folks at our info desk at the top end of the market.

Salsa
My friend Kirsten suggested making this Salsa for a party I had over the weekend. It was super easy to make and very tasty. Personally, I don’t like cilantro, so we made two batches, one with and one without, and they both went over great.
Ingredients:
- 3 BC Tomatoes
- ½ Red Onion
- ½ White Onion
- 2 Green Jalapeno Peppers (we took the seeds out, but if you want it extra spicy leave them in)
- 2 Cloves of Garlic
- 2 Limes
- Cilantro
- Salt and Pepper
Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual
In his new book, Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual, Michael Pollan gives readers simple, direct and helpful advice to a healthier diet. The introduction of his book explains how he has broken up his advice into three sections: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Three easy tips that sound simple enough on the surface but once you delve into the inner workings of Pollan’s book there are definitely some points that are not quite as obvious as you would think.
There are 64 very easy to read, mostly one page, food tips in this book. A few of my favorites include: “Rule 8: Avoid food products that make health claims” where Pollan goes into detail about the healthiest food in the supermarket, the produce, doesn’t have health warnings: “Don’t take the silence of the yams as a sign they have nothing valuable to say about your health.” The second chapter in Pollan’s little book, “What kind of food should I eat? (Mostly Plants),” has tips about what kind of food to eat: “Don’t eat breakfast cereal that changes the color of the milk.”
The final chapter is devoted to “How much should I eat? (Not too much).” It provides useful proverbs, traditions and advice to help one not eat too much, or too often: “Rule 48: Consider your gut” talks about how your belly doesn’t realize it’s full until about 20 minutes after it is. So take a break while you eat, don’t hurry, and you will find yourself eating less.
Overall, I found Michael Pollan’s book a very interesting read and I will definitely keep his advice in mind next time I’m at the grocery store or at the farmers market!

Apple Muffins
These muffins were excellent. I am not generally a baker — my cupcakes tend to either not rise at all or over flow too much — so I was taking a risk making these. But I love apples, and I love muffins (just not the ones I usually make), so I decided to give it a shot. My roommates have decided that they love my new job, as long as I keep making this tasty treats like these! Enjoy!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ cup butter
- ½ white sugar
- ½ brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 ¼ tsp vanilla
- 4 apples
