Thoughts on the Opening Market

June 28, 2009 By newwestfarmers

Thank you to everyone who attended our opening market. The rain-free market went off without a hitch, including Mayor Wright’s appearance and the salute from the Seymour Artillery Company with piper Sandy Kirby. Shaw Cable was there to capture it all, and we are told it will be aired a week Tuesday.

Thank you to Mayor Wright and the City Councillors in attendance, as well as Rick Page from the City of New Westminster. Also, thanks to Dawn Black and Peter Julian for stopping by and supporting the market. Violin was provided for the day by Stephanie and Jinhee, and Allyson was on hand for face painting. Both New Westminster Family Place and the Fraser River Discovery Centre were there to entertain kids. We had over 30 vendors in attendance!

Thank you especially to city residents who stopped by, hung out, sat in the park and especially shopped at our market. Estimates place our attendance at about 1,100 shoppers and for that, we are deliriously happy. We look forward to our market next week, July 2nd. See you there.

Land Acknowledgement

Our market is grateful to operate on the unceded land of the Qayqayt, Kwikwetlem, and other Halkomelem speaking Peoples. We acknowledge that colonialism has made invisible their histories and connections to the land. We acknowledge the incredible gift this land is to our market and BC Agriculture. We commit to the ongoing work of decolonization and allyship.
