September 1st

August 29, 2011 By newwestfarmers

Really? September? You have got to be kidding me. There is just no way it is September already. This week, why not celebrate the last week of summer vacation with a trip to the market and grab a bite to eat? Bring a blanket and pull up some shade. Feel free to borrow our bocce set for a game in beautiful Tipperary Park.

Last week’s cookbook swap was so popular that we’ve decided to include this as a regular fixture at all non rainy markets for the rest of the season. Look for it up at the info table and feel free to bring your unwanted cookbooks to swap for cookbooks from our stash. It’s a book for a book of approximate equal value, or you can buy a book for a minimum $2 donation.

Our musical guest this week is traditional Andean music by Rumi Morales. Our music at the market is sponsored by the great people at the Heritage Grill. Be sure to check out the kids area with crafts sponsored by local realtor Derrick Thornhill, and stop by to see our facepainter Allyson to get your arm or face painted. Stop by to see what the folks from the New Westminster Public Library are working on.

You can reach the market via transit by taking the 106 bus or the Skytrain to Columbia Street Station and walking to the market at 4th and Royal. Parking is available in the neighbourhood for free along Royal Avenue, Queens Avenue, or at City Hall’s lot after 4:30. Please respect our neighbours. Cyclists can drop bikes off to the fine folks at our info desk at the top end of the market for safekeeping. Don’t forget to check out our cool new merchandise – we are now selling reusable produce bags made locally by the people at Carebags.

A list of all vendors attending the September 1st market is below, but remember to check back for cancellations and updates! This list is current as of August 30th.

August 25

Can you believe there are only a few weeks left in the market season? Our last summer market is 7 short weeks away. This week, we’re looking for input on our upcoming winter market and if you have a free few moments, please fill out our survey about the winter market. We’re deep in the planning stages and are about to release the application form for vendors, so stay tuned!

This week at the market we are pleased to offer up the very-popular cookbook swap. Bring your used cookbooks that have become boring and tired, and swap for something new. It works simple: book for an approximately equal valued book. If you don’t have any cookbooks to swap, don’t despair – we’ll sell books out of our stash for a $2 donation each. Books will be located at the info table at the top of the market.

Our musical guest this week is accomplished accordionist Chris Messytone. Our music at the market is sponsored by the great people at the Heritage Grill. Be sure to check out the kids area with crafts sponsored by local realtor Derrick Thornhill, and say hi to our facepainter Allyson, back from her vacation and ready to paint your face or arm. Stop by to see what the folks from the New Westminster Hyack Festival Association are working on.

Our bike rack has temporarily gone missing, but you can drop your bike off to the fine folks at our info desk at the top end of the market for safekeeping. Don’t forget to check out our cool new merchandise – we are now selling reusable produce bags made locally by the people at Carebags.

Leftover Potatoes Potato Salad

August 11, 2011 By newwestfarmers

After I made that tasty Salmon Dinner the other day, I had a whole whack of leftover potatoes that we had cooked, and then not eaten. When this happens, usually, the leftovers just sit in my fridge and get forgotten about until one day, in the distant future, they are discover and unceremoniously thrown away. I was determined not to let this happen with my delicious farmers market fresh potatoes. I brought them over to my parents house on Sunday and looked up a quick and easy Potato Salad recipe. It turned out pretty good and my entire family enjoyed it!

Ingredients:

  • Potatoes (I can only estimate, but I think I had about 1 lb)
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 Carrots
  • 1 Apple
  • 1/4 cup Sour Cream
  • 1/4 cup Mayonnaise

These potatoes had been boiled for about 20 mins and then seasoned with chives, butter, salt and pepper. They then sat in my fridge for about a day. And here we are!
Cut the potatoes into quarters and put in a big bowl.
Cut carrots up in small pieces and add to bowl.
Cut apples up into small pieces, and add to bowl.
Boil the two eggs.
Cut eggs up and add the bowl (I didn't quite boil mine long enough but they were still good!).
Mix together all the ingredients.
Measure out sour cream and mayo and add to the bowl. Gently mix everything all together.
Done! Enjoy!

Salmon Dinner

August 10, 2011 By newwestfarmers

Warning: This is no ordinary recipe blog post. This time I went all out and make a complete meal, and boy was it tasty!

I’m more of a baker overall. Most of the time I’m just making dinner for myself, so it seems a little pointless to go all out on a big dinner for one (one of my roommates is a vegetarian and the other isn’t home much). So, to solve this eating alone problem, I invited my friend/eating/cooking assistant over. We made a Salmon Dinner, complete with delicious new potatoes and a salad. I’ve only cooked salmon once before and the results were less than desirable (there was salmon all over that darn BBQ!), so I was a little apprehensive to try it again. But the end result was delicious and we both had fun doing it!

Please note that we stopped making the salmon before we put it in the oven so we could prepare the rest of the stuff 🙂

Salmon Steaks with Savory Blueberry Sauce

I found the original recipe for this on Allrecipes.com. It had high reviews and sounded like an interesting twist to salmon. Some of the reviewers had mentioned an overly vinegary taste to the sauce, and suggested reducing it (I had to look up exactly what “reducing vinegar” was…).

Reducing the Vinegar

Measure out double the amount of vinegar you need for the recipe (in this case, 1/2 cup)
In a small pot, bring the vinegar to a boil on a high heat and let it simmer for about five minutes, lowering heat if necessary. The vinegar should now be reduced, measure out required amount.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup chicken stock
  • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon honey (buy here)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup chicken stock
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries (buy here)
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh chives
  • 4 (6 ounce) salmon steaks ** I only used three, due to number of people (buy here)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste
Recipe: Check! (By the end of the night it didn't look nearly as pretty, orange juice and chicken stock all over it!)
Combine Orange Juice, (newly reduced) vinegar,
honey,
and 1/2 cup of chicken stock
in a saucepan. Bring to boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium.
In a small bowl, dissolve cornstarch in 1/4 cup of chicken stock.
Stir into the simmering sauce. Cook and stir until sauce thickens. Only about one minute or so.
Cut up chives into small pieces.
Add chives and blueberries to sauce and keep warm over a low heat. **This is where we stopped to prepare the rest of our meal**
Preheat broiler and coat salmon with olive oil, and salt and pepper for taste.
Put in oven and cook for 5 minutes each side, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork.
Done! Serve and enjoy!

Potatoes

We made super simple potatoes, only boiling them and then adding chives, butter and salt and pepper for taste. They we’re really good and complemented the rest of the mean well.

Ingredients

  • 2 lb bag of potatoes (buy here)
  • butter
  • salt and pepper
  • chives
After washing your potatoes, cut the bigger ones in half.
Boil for about 20 minutes, until soft.
Once boiled, drain water and mix in butter. Then add chives (we just cut up three of four and threw them in) and add the salt and pepper for extra flavor! And you're done!

Spinach Salad

At the market on Thursday, I still wasn’t quite sure what I was going to make to go with my salmon. So, when I was buying the potatoes, I bought a bunch of my favorite vegetables and ended up making this salad with them. It’s a little random, but we liked it!

Ingredients (all can be bought from here or here)

  • Spinach
  • Cucumber
  • Carrots
  • Broccoli
Wash, dry and rip up one head of spinach.
Cut up cucumber.
Cut up broccoli.
Grate carrots.
Mix everything together and enjoy! Yum!

Meal Completed!

It took us about an hour overall to make this (it might have taken a little longer then usual because we are chatty ladies). But it was so worth it, everything turned out great!
Nomnomnom!
