Royal City Farmer’s Market Society AGM Jan. 28

January 16, 2010 By newwestfarmers

Mark your calendars for the 2nd annual general meeting of the Royal City Farmer’s Market Society:

Thursday January 28, 2010
Sign in and new memberships: 6:30 pm
Meeting: 7:00 pm

New West Public Library Auditorium
716 Sixth Ave.
New Westminster

Guest speaker will be Chris Bodnar from Glen Valley Farms located near Fort Langley. Glen Valley was a popular vendor at our summer market. The 50 acre certified organic farm was purchased through a co-operative that formed to save the farm in 1997. Individuals apply to farm the land and produce the vegetables, herbs and fruit and eggs you’ve seen at the market.

Board reports from the summer and winter markets, election of a 2010 Board, and comments/questions will fill out the evening. Refreshments and goodies will be served.

We look forward to your continued support and to seeing you on January 28!

Art in the Park

Dusk in Green and Orange, by Ambera Wellmann
Dusk in Green and Orange, by Ambera Wellmann

Last year, we had a few visual artists rent stall space from us at a loss because they either sold nothing, or hardly anything at all. While they got decent exposure, and reported having a good time, they didn’t make enough to justify renting the space. People don’t really buy art on impulse for the most part. They look at it, they mull it over, they think on it, they let it speak to them, and if they decide to go for it, they do, but usually not the first time they see it. Artists are generally people who are simply expressing creativity, and don’t have an expectation of profit when they set out to make art. So this year, rather than seek out artists to rent stall spaces, we’re creating a new community initiave called Art in the Park.

Art in the Park is pretty simple: we allow visual artists to set up for free in the park next to our market and bring works in progress, completed works for sale, or gallery pieces not for sale. They can bring a tent and display tables, or it can be as simple as their easel. We’ll provide signage and advertising for the area. There are a few simple guidelines – among others like how the space is first come first served, how you need to pre-register to come, and how we’d like you to purchase a membership in our organization ($10 annually) in order to have your person covered by insurance – but it’s really simple, and it’s simply a way for artists to connect with potential buyers.

If you know an artist that could use this opportunity, or if you’re an artist yourself, please contact the Market Manager at marketmanager@newwestfarmers.ca for more information or to register. Our first Art in the Park market will be July 23rd, which also happens to be our next special event market to celebrate the City of New Westminster’s 150th birthday.

Fraser River Discovery Centre

June 19, 2009 By newwestfarmers

At our opening market, you’ll see a booth from the Fraser River Discovery Centre. New Westminster exists because of the mighty Fraser, and the FRDC strives to educate you on everything Fraser. They’re bringing a fish kite craft for kids and a learning booth and will be on hand to answer all your questions.

“Running from the Rockies to the Pacific Ocean, the Fraser River has shaped the province of BC. Learn about the ecology, the history, the culture, the communities and the industry of the Mighty Fraser River! Not far from the Expo Skytrain line, and along the boardwalk at New Westminster Quay, the Fraser River Discovery Centre features a gift shop, a large exhibit gallery, a theatre and a full range of public and school programs.”

The Fraser River Discovery Centre is located right on (what else) the Fraser, at the Quay, at 788 Quayside Drive.
