August 18

August 16, 2011 By newwestfarmers

This week’s market is about celebrating the colour green! Here are some of our favourite green things you can find at the market this week: peas, carrot tops, cupcake sprinkles, basil (oh my goodness – the basil!), guacamole, fused glass necklaces,  peppers, zebra tomatoes, Swarovski crystals, scented soaps, lettuce, corn husks, macarons (two kinds of green ones!), antipasto, dill… what else is on your list?

Musical guests this week are just being comfirmed and we’ll publish who it is once we find out. Our music at the market is sponsored by the great people at the Heritage Grill. Be sure to check out the kids area with crafts sponsored by local realtor Derrick Thornhill, and stop by to see what the folks from the Royal City Gogos are working on.

You can reach the market via transit by taking the 106 bus or the Skytrain to Columbia Street Station and walking to the market at 4th and Royal. Parking is available in the neighbourhood for free or at City Hall’s lot after 4:30. Please respect our neighbours. Our bike rack has temporarily gone missing, but you can drop your bike off to the fine folks at our info desk at the top end of the market.

Leftover Potatoes Potato Salad

August 11, 2011 By newwestfarmers

After I made that tasty Salmon Dinner the other day, I had a whole whack of leftover potatoes that we had cooked, and then not eaten. When this happens, usually, the leftovers just sit in my fridge and get forgotten about until one day, in the distant future, they are discover and unceremoniously thrown away. I was determined not to let this happen with my delicious farmers market fresh potatoes. I brought them over to my parents house on Sunday and looked up a quick and easy Potato Salad recipe. It turned out pretty good and my entire family enjoyed it!

Ingredients:

  • Potatoes (I can only estimate, but I think I had about 1 lb)
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 Carrots
  • 1 Apple
  • 1/4 cup Sour Cream
  • 1/4 cup Mayonnaise

These potatoes had been boiled for about 20 mins and then seasoned with chives, butter, salt and pepper. They then sat in my fridge for about a day. And here we are!
Cut the potatoes into quarters and put in a big bowl.
Cut carrots up in small pieces and add to bowl.
Cut apples up into small pieces, and add to bowl.
Boil the two eggs.
Cut eggs up and add the bowl (I didn't quite boil mine long enough but they were still good!).
Mix together all the ingredients.
Measure out sour cream and mayo and add to the bowl. Gently mix everything all together.
Done! Enjoy!

FYI: New Westminster Cultural Crawl

August 1, 2011 By newwestfarmers

August 13 & 14 New Westminster Cultural Crawl!

August 13 & 14, 2011 marks the launch of New Westminster’s  8th Annual Cultural Crawl, with a two day city-wide Arts & Cultural experience.  Meet local artists and artisans, discover our heritage, and prepare to be delighted by our unique cultural footprint.

Each August arts and cultural enthusiasts travel to New West from throughout the lower mainland to visit artists, studios, galleries, live music venues, restaurants, theatres and historical locations throughout the city, exploring the “new” New Westminster and discovering upcoming and professional talent.  The Royal City represents a largely undiscovered arts and cultural community that ranges from emerging artists to severalFederation of Canadian Artists members with local and international acclaim.

The City of New Westminster has long committed to being a creative and vibrant city and its residents have put the Royal City on the cultural map by creating galleries, theatres and historical venues that invite residents and visitors alike to discover our unique history and locally-created works of art.

This year’s crawl will include two days jam-packed full of open studios and local artists featuring their work and presenting live paint-ins at your favourite arts, culture and heritage destinations in New Westminster.

Check out the Art in the Park at Royal City Farmers Market August 11th. More details to come!
